Gingham Lined Cropped Jacket with Turn-Back Cuffs

The trick to this jacket is on the inside. Turn the cuffs back and a gingham lining shows at the wrist, a small flash of pattern against an otherwise plain shell. The front fastens on an asymmetric run of tortoiseshell buttons beneath a flat point collar, and the hem curves gently rather than cutting straight across. The shell is plain on purpose, so the pattern stays a private detail instead of becoming the point of the jacket.

Cropped at the waist and boxy through the body, it sits over wide trousers or straight jeans without piling bulk at the hip, which matters when the rest of the outfit already has volume in it. Raglan sleeves keep the shoulder soft, the welt pockets stay flat, and the full lining helps the jacket hold its shape over a jumper. The collar sits flat and open, leaving room for a scarf without crowding the neck, and the cropped length works over a dress as readily as over trousers.
